ROAD TRIP SERIES: BEST ONE-DAY TRIPS IN ALABAMA – PART 1

October 21st, 2018 by

The American day trip is first and foremost a celebration. It’s a love letter to the interstate highway system, a uniquely American ceremony of faded signage and the familiar lullaby of the world passing by.

Day trips have a way of revealing the character and quality of automobiles just as they reveal the depth, size, and stunning wonder of our country. America through the driver-side window of your Lexus is a sight to behold: vivid, luminous, brilliant.

Reinhardt Lexus would like to make a few suggestions, each of them a viable day trip to suit the various flavors of your life:

1) The Alabama Wine Trail

If it’s wine you’re looking for, look no further than your own backyard. Located a mere 53 minutes from Montgomery, Ozan Vineyard & Winery offers airy, sunny staples any wine lover would be more than pleased to sample. With everything from a spring-sweet Riesling to an exceptional Blueberry Port, Ozan aims to please even if it means taking a ride on the Saturday morning wine train complete with tastings and cheese plates.

Your ES 350—with its 268-horsepower engine achieving 30mpg—can make quick and economical work of the short ride to Calera, AL, and on to the next winery. We further recommend the luxuriously appointed Hidden Meadow Vineyard in Jemison, AL, with its sumptuous outdoor spaces and expansive views. One more stop at Morgan Creek Winery in Harpersville completes the day with a glass of their locally famous Vulcan Red.

2) Gulf Shores

There’s enough room in your LX 570 for twice the beach balls, pool noodles, and towels you’ve packed. There’s even room for a second cooler, which you may or may not have seriously considered. With 7,000-lbs of towing capacity, the LX 570 makes hauling the boat all too easy, a coast to the coast, a breeze to the breeze. At just 3 hours away from Montgomery, the Original Oyster House Seafood Restaurant in Gulf Shores is the perfect day trip destination for a taste of one of the gulf’s most famous products. For couples or families of all sizes, we recommend a Waverunner Dolphin Tour led by a local guide. No need to fret over the heat. Lexus offers SUVs with multi-zone climate control. Third row seating, optional entertainment packages, and subscription-free traffic and weather updates will have you beach-side in no time.

3) Little River Canyon National Preserve

If you’re the kind of person who likes to appreciate nature from the comfort of your performance automobile, combining a proper driving experience with the beauty of the wilderness, look no further than Little River Canyon in Fort Payne, AL. An 11-mile scenic drive snakes along the western side of the canyon offering transcendent views down into the lush, bustling canyon. Pack a picnic basket and pull off at any one of the roadside overlooks. Your Lexus RC F—with 467hp resulting in 4.4-second 0-60—will devour the winding asphalt above the canyon. Blink and you’ll miss it!

4) The Wiregrass Region

Located in the scenic Wiregrass region, Dothan, Alabama, hails itself as the “Peanut Capital of the world,” for its rich history of peanut production. From November 3-12, Dothan will be hosting its annual Peanut Festival complete with carnival rides, beauty pageants, live music, and food vendors galore.

Dothan’s George Washington Carver Interpretive Museum offers visitors a literal and figurative walk through history with their Social Progress Heroes Timeline. And be sure to stop in nearby Enterprise, AL, to see the nearly notorious Boll Weevil Monument commemorating the insect’s blight on Alabama’s agriculture. Your Lexus IS 350 F Sport—which somehow maintains a baffling 28-mpg on the highway despite its 306hp engine—can take you all over the Wiregrass region with power and fuel economy to spare.

5) Lake Martin

For the water-sports enthusiast and eager camper alike, Lake Martin offers an array of serene opportunities. Wind Creek State Park just south of Alexander City contains over 1,400 acres of lake-side wilderness.

The avid fisherman will enjoy placid waters broken by the occasional bluegill or striped bass and plenty of tree-shaded curves from which to drop a line. Your Lexus GX 460 has room for any kind of gear. Fold-flat third-row seating allows for ample rods, tackle boxes, tents, and coolers while full-time four-wheel drive makes simple work of the trails.

Nearby Alexander City hosts the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum, an excellent opportunity to break away from the campsite for an afternoon to bask in the supercharged glory of automotive history.

6) Monroeville/Gee’s Bend

Few places mean as much as to Alabama’s literary and cultural heritage as the city of Monroeville and the community of Boykin, also known as Gee’s Bend. For the Harper Lee fan, Monroeville layers flesh to fiction as the inspiration for Lee’s literary town of Maycomb.

The Gee’s Bend ferry delivers the inquisitive visitor into a living civil rights and artistic community. The women of Gee’s Bend have been creating quilting masterpieces since the early 20th century and are still at it today. A former plantation community, Gee’s Bend is famous the world over for the brilliance, innovation, and sheer passion of its quilters.
